The defamation judge between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard on Friday issued the final verdict in the case, eliminating the possibility of any last-minute agreement between the two actors.
One of Hurd’s representatives stated that he intended to appeal the court ruling. He has 30 days to submit this request.
The jury in the case ruled on June 1 that Depp and Hurd had both defamed each other. However, the decision was heavily in favor of Depp, who was to pay $ 10 million in damages plus an additional $ 5 million in criminal compensation.
The judge in the case did not immediately record the jury’s verdict, but instead said Depp and Hurd have until June 24 to reach an agreement that will issue a verdict instead, and if the two do not agree, the jury’s verdict will remain.
At Friday’s hearing, the two celebrities’ lawyers told the judge that no agreement had been reached and that the judge had formally registered the jury’s verdict.
Following the ruling, Depp’s lawyers challenged the $ 2 million sentence against him, leaving open the possibility that he might appeal this part of the ruling.
Shortly after the trial, Depp’s lawyer said in an interview that the Hollywood couple might agree that Depp might agree to waive financial compensation in exchange for Hurd’s promise not to appeal.
In a post-trial interview, Hurd said he stood by his testimony and was charged with physical harassment by Depp. The judge reduced Hurd’s criminal case to $ 350,000 due to state law restrictions. But one of Hurd’s lawyers said he would not be able to pay Depp $ 8.35 million and objected to the ruling.
