The famous French-Cypriot rapper Diam’s broke his silence after 7 years and told TF1 about his conversion to Islam and his withdrawal from singing.
The original name of this French singer, who became very popular in France in the early 21st century, is “Melanie Gregor”. He says that after “becoming a Muslim, he is no longer Diams and has become like Melanie again.” In recent years, there have been unofficial reports of his long stay in Saudi Arabia.
Diames, who once committed suicide at the age of 14 before her popularity, says it was for the first time since she committed suicide that she “decided to give her life a new lease of life by writing.”
Writings that a few years later made him one of the most popular French rappers. In 2004, he portrayed the face of a highly political and committed artist with Marine’s insulting song against the French National Front. Diames is probably the only French female rapper to perform in a packed auditorium in the Parc des Princes in Paris.
However, in an interview with TF1, the singer said that “at the height of his popularity and wealth through singing, he became severely depressed again and tried to commit suicide” until he was treated in a specialized clinic.
Diames, who has only grown up with his mother since the age of four, says the only weapon that saved him from “slips” this time was Islam.
He says he became acquainted with Islam step by step through a friendship with pop singer Vita, and on a trip to Mauritius with this friend. Diamonds named one of their most famous albums after this friend in 2008 “Diamonds and Vita”.
He says that after learning about Islam, he realized that his entire period of popularity due to songwriting was just an “absurd honor in the drunken era.”
Criticizing the rumors that “her conversion to Islam is related to her love for a Muslim man” and the wave of anti-Islamism in France today, she said: “I am a woman, when I converted to Islam I was a single woman. And I just want to tell all the French, when you talk about a Muslim woman, do not just summarize her in hijab. “My Muslim is not the only hijab.”
Diamonds got married years after converting to Islam and says today he is a “happy mother.” The 41-year-old believes she is experiencing “the meaning of a dream” with the family.
Melanie Gregor met and married his wife and father-in-law, Fawzi Tarkhani, in 2015. Tarkhani is also a rapper, songwriter and writer.
Recently, a documentary called “Hello” about the brutal life of this French Cypriot woman has been released in cinemas. The film was also screened at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Diames won many major pop and rap awards in France between 2003 and 2010.
