Amnesty International reports that nearly 100 Iranian prisoners have died as a result of deliberate negligence on the part of prison officials.
The detailed report, published Tuesday in “Death Waiting Room: Deaths from Deprivation of Medical Care in Iranian Prisons,” describes in great detail how prison officials in Iran prevented deportation or delayed emergency transfers. Prisoners to the hospital, played a role in the death of prisoners or are the main cause.
According to the report, 64 of the 96 detainees reported by Amnesty International died inside the prison.
“Among them, many have died in custody, which means that they have not even received primary medical care in the last hours of their lives,” the report said. “Others died while being held in prison medical facilities with basic equipment.”
Amnesty International reports that 26 detainees also died as a result of deliberate and fatal delays by medical staff or prison officials during their transfer to or shortly after their admission to the hospital.
“In at least six cases, critically ill detainees were transferred to solitary confinement, detention or quarantine,” the report said. Of these, four died alone in prison, while the remaining two eventually obtained permission to be sent to the hospital, but only when it was too late; “They either died while being taken to hospital or shortly after being admitted.”
In the vast majority of recorded cases, the dead prisoners were young or middle-aged: 23 were between 19 and 39 years old and 26 were between 40 and 59 years old.
