A sequel to the 2019 film is officially happening, as confirmed by Joker writer and director Todd Phillips.
Phillips revealed the second Joker film was on its way on Instagram as he shared its working title to be Joker: Folie à Deux.
Excited fans have already begun unpacking the title’s meaning which, of course, has led to many storyline theories to be shared across social media.
OKER 2’S WORKING TITLE ANNOUNCED
Joker director Todd Phillips confirmed there would be a sequel to the 2019 film on Tuesday (7 June).
The news comes almost three years after it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in August 2019.
In a post to Instagram, Phillips shared a first look at the script’s cover as well as a snap of Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix reading through the new material.
On the cover, the film’s working title was revealed to be Joker: Folie à Deux, which has since left fans curious to know its meaning.
MEANING OF FOLIE À DEUX EXPLAINED
Folie à Deux is a French phrase that when translated can mean “madness for two” or “shared madness.”
As explained by PsychScene Hub, Folie à Deux is also known as a psychotic disorder which sees two individuals share similar symptoms of delusions or hallucinations.
Elsewhere, Fall Out Boy fans may already be familiar with the phrase, as it was also the title of the rock group’s 2008 album.

Joker 2’s working title appears to have already sparked fan theories as some have begun to dissect how Folie à Deux’s meaning could reflect storylines in the upcoming film.
Many fans seem to think the “shared madness” meaning of the title could hint at Harley Quinn featuring alongside the Joker:Some believe it could reflect the concept of a “Joker imposter” as they remembered actor Willem Dafoe’s recent GQ interview where he shared his idea about there being an imposter as well as Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:
Others think the title could hint at the feature of other DC characters, including the Joker’s nemesis Batman or one of his other sidekicks, Punchline:
