The bodies of 46 people were found in a truck carrying illegal immigrants abandoned in San Antonio, Texas, and 16 rescued passengers were taken to hospital.
“Sixteen injured, including 12 adults and four children, are receiving intensive care,” San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood told a news conference. “They were awake when they were taken to the medical centers. We have found about 46 bodies so far.”
Lack of proper ventilation in this 18-wheeled trailer, which is located about 240 kilometers from the border with Mexico, has caused heat to the occupants, while in Texas, the temperature has been reported to be 40 degrees. According to the head of the Texas Fire Department, the survivors suffered from severe heatstroke and their bodies were hot from the heat, but no trace of water was found in the trailer.
Police officers went to the scene following a call from a local worker who heard the sound of help from inside the trailer. No information has yet been obtained as to why the trailer was abandoned and when these people were inside, and investigations are ongoing.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Eberrard tweeted more about the incident in Texas and the deployment of the Mexican consul to the scene. Including the fact that at least two of the people who were taken to the hospital are from Guatemala and that the US police have arrested three people in this regard. The trailer also had no technical inspection and was most likely used illegally by smugglers.
The influx of illegal immigrants into the United States has increased since Jobiden entered the White House. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott blamed Joe Biden and the government’s border policies for the deaths.
San Antonio officials say about 19,000 immigrants have arrived in Texas, just 240 kilometers from the Mexican border, this month alone.
This is not the first time that unfortunate migrants have had an accident on the way to and from this city and lost their lives. In a similar tragedy in 2017, the lifeless bodies of 10 immigrants were found in an abandoned truck in a parking lot on the outskirts of San Antonio. However, the recent incident is one of the deadliest tragic events in recent years for immigrants in the United States.
