TikTok users frequently complain about spending hours on the app, especially late at night. To address these concerns, the business is testing new sleep reminders, which include the ability to set up alerts when it’s time for bed and to silence notifications during the recommended seven hours of sleep. TikTok confirmed to Euro International on Friday that the new sleep reminders are being tested with a small group of users around the world.
According to screenshots released by product intelligence firm Watchful.ai, the new function appears in the app’s “screen time” settings. Participants in the test will see a new “sleep reminders” option. According to the app, sleep reminders will let you “know whether you reach your TikTok sleep time to help you get to bed when you want to.” After you choose a sleep time, the app will remind you to close it when the clock approaches that time. TikTok will also turn off push alerts for seven hours after you go to bed to assist you to avoid distractions.
According to a TikTok spokesman, the firm is constantly working on new methods to assist users’ well-being, and this new tool expands on its current digital well-being capabilities. The app originally debuted screen-time management tools in February 2020 and has since added new features to give users more control over their app usage.
Last June, the company launched an in-app tool to help users control how much time they spend on TikTok in a single sitting by allowing them to schedule regular screen-time breaks. By default, it suggests break reminders of either 10, 20, or 30 minutes, though users can set reminders for a custom time if they wanted to engage in either longer or shorter sessions before showing them the notification. The app also has restricted nighttime notifications for teen accounts. Users aged 13-15 don’t receive push notifications from 9 p.m. and users aged 16-17 have push notifications disabled starting at 10 p.m.
TikTok’s addictive nature has been the subject of multiple psychological research due to its unrivaled ability to distract and interest users via its superior recommendation system. As a result, it’s anticipatable that TikTok is experimenting with new features to give consumers more control over their TikTok usage. As with any other beta feature, it’s unclear when or if TikTok intends to make the sleep reminders function more publicly available.
