Euro international News : In 2020, 4.07 million babies were born in the European Union, indicating a continuing downward trend that began in 2016.
The European Union’s statistics office (Eurostat) has announced that the female fertility rate in the European Union has reached 1.5 live births per woman by 2020. The rate peaked at 1.57 in 2008, 2010 and 2016.
According to the report, the highest female fertility rates were in France (1.83 live births per woman), followed by Romania (1.80), the Czech Republic (1.71) and Denmark (1.68).
In contrast, the lowest fertility rates were observed in Malta (1.13 births per woman), Spain (1.19) and Italy (1.24).
According to the report, the proportion of children born to foreign mothers varied significantly between EU member states. As of 2020, 64% of babies in Luxembourg were born to foreign mothers, compared to 39% in Cyprus and around 30% in Austria, Malta and Belgium.
In nine EU member states, the share of children born to foreign mothers was less than 10 percent, with the lowest in Bulgaria, Slovakia (both at 2 percent) and Lithuania (3 percent).
