Australian court and Google
Australian court and Google? On Friday, Australia’s competition watchdog reported that a court had dismissed its lawsuit against Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., which alleged that they have given misinformed about the expanding use of their private information for targeted advertising.
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission filed the lawsuit in July 2020, alleging that Google changed its policy in 2016 to combine user activity on non-Google websites that use its advertising technology with personal information from their accounts. They charged the business with disregarding obtaining the users’ express consent before making this adjustment.
Although Google “only took the measures with their (users’) informed agreement,” the regulator said, the Federal Court concluded that the message that allowed users to approve policy modifications was not deceptive.
In addition, the court pointed out that Google did not curtail account holders’ rights under the privacy policy.
Google Australia did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
